HEALTH AND SAFETY

BISCO members understand that health and safety are critical components to a sustainable community for today and into the future.  We are committed to increasing the ability of local residents obtaining education and access to valuable medical information and assistance.   This is an issue with many layers of complexity, all compounded by the fragile environmental region in which we live.  BISCO is working hard to uplift voices for change in several aspects of health and safety.

SOME IMPORTANT AREAS OF HEALTH AND SAFETY FOR THE BAYOU REGION

  • Substantial state budget cuts to providers of healthcare to vulnerable populations
  • Substantial state Medicaid budget cuts, which provide health insurance to vulnerable populations, such as:  people with disabilities, seniors, veterans, children from low income families
  • Lack of sufficient health literacy programs to uplift the ability of vulnerable populations to understand, seek and obtain adequate health care
  • Increased vulnerabilities to illness and injury due to:

chemical / industrial accidents and ongoing pollution

unregulated or enforced protection of shared natural resources

consumption of suspect food and water sources

general population susceptibility to genetic markers for specific illnesses

unhealthy lifestyles as a way of life
